Robert Trent Jones was born in Wales; his son and namesake, Robert Trent Jones, Jr., returned to Celtic Manor to design the Wentwood Hills course. On Friday, September 28, 2001, the European Ryder Cup Board announced that Wentwood Hills will host the 2010 Ryder Cupthe first time Wales will host golf's most prestigious match-play team competition. "I'm delighted for Terry Matthews and his great team that Celtic Manor has been awarded the exciting Ryder Cup matches," said Jones. "As a golf architect with a direct Welsh lineage, this is especially gratifying. The world will come to see and know the green glory of Wales and her warmhearted peoplealways with a song on their lips and magic in their hearts. We look forward to helping create the best setting we can for the world's greatest players. I'm especially pleased to return to the country of my father's birth."
