Holiday Season Brings Early Giftsto Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects

PALO ALTO, Calif., December 15, 2008 — Though reindeer have been known to graze not far from the northernmost of Robert Trent Jones II’s (RTJ II’s) more than 250 golf course designs worldwide, the company’s work has not yet reached the North Pole. But apparently founder Robert Trent Jones, Jr., partner Bruce Charlton, managing director Mike Kahler, and the rest of the RTJ II team have been very good this year—so good that four early presents were bestowed upon the firm this month.

On December 2nd, Golf Digest recognized RTJ II’s Chambers Bay golf course as the #1 Best New Public Course of 2008. Chambers joins 26 other RTJ II courses that have been ranked among Golf Digest’s best new courses, including five other RTJ II courses that have won #1 Best New Course. In announcing the award, architecture editor Ron Whitten called Chambers Bay, “a chasm of bewildering beauty that overwhelms the senses . . . a celebration of American innovation, a land-reclamation project that promotes the positive environmental aspects of golf . . . a collection of holes as captivatingly complex and playfully quirky as will ever be seen in a U.S. Open.” Chambers Bay has also won best new course awards from GOLF Magazine, Travel & Leisure Golf, and Golfweek, and has been awarded the 2010 U.S. Amateur and 2015 U.S. Open Championships.

On December 3rd, RTJ II Chairman and Master Architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Asian Golf Monthly. Winners were selected on the basis of their contribution to the industry and the effect and impact they have had on the growth of the game in the region. The award was announced during a lavish gala banquet at the Mission Hills Golf Club, in Dongguan, China. RTJ II’s Sta. Elena Golf Club, in The Philippines, was also announced as a winner of the magazine’s Environment Award, created to recognize golf courses for their attention to the environment as well as efforts taken to ensure that correct cultural practices are in place together with a sustainable program to conserve both flora and fauna.

On December 4th, GOLF Magazine announced that RTJ II’s Lübker Golf Resort, in Djurs, Denmark, has been selected as the Best New International Course of 2008. GOLF senior editor Joe Passov called Lübker “Scandinavia’s answer to Valderrama,” and lauded its entertaining and challenging character, bold bunkering, daunting green surrounds, and remarkable conditioning. Lübker was the first real estate golf project in Denmark, and developer Poul Anker Lübker sold 90% of the real estate in an initial offering prior to breaking ground for the golf course. In addition, shares in the overall project were sold on the Danish Stock Exchange. GOLF also named RTJ II’s Rainmakers, in Alto, NM as one of the top 10 new private courses of 2008.

Additionally, RTJ II has been in the news after releasing its heralded Green Proclamation earlier this month—the firm’s public commitment to continue pursuing 10 tenets of environmentally responsible golf course design, and calling for others in the industry to join them in this important work.

Robert Trent Jones, Jr. says of the firm’s recent flurry of successes, “This is the best week I can remember in almost 40 years of designing golf courses. Our entire team is proud, excited and grateful for the recognition. We see it as a great opportunity to show the entire golf community that environmentally responsible golf courses also make sporting, artistic, and financial sense, and we look forward to continuing our legacy of award-winning, green designs for enlightened patrons of the game and investors worldwide.”
