Sun Rise Golf & Country Club
Yang Mei, Tao Yuan, Taiwan
Design Style: Parkland Course Type: Private
Setting: Coastal Inland

Located 35 minutes from Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, and 20 minutes from the airport, Sun Rise Golf & Country Club resides in an area named for a local tree famous for its edible fruit. Golfers will eat up the expansive ocean views from some of the holes and from a 450,000 sq. ft. clubhouse that has been described as "monumental." Our biggest challenge in designing Sun Rise was living up to the owner's vision of creating the #1 golf course in Taiwan and one worthy of the massively impressive clubhouse. At the request of the owner's wife we landscaped the course with‚ flowers and ornamental plants chosen especially for the site. The result is a wide, sweeping, pastoral expanse of greenery that exceeded all expectations.

The 200-acre site presented a major design challenge. The project's epic scope required us to move 2.5 million cubic meters of earth, which we used to construct a course that boasts the clean, sharp features and sweeping movement popular at the time it was constructed. Robert Trent Jones II also delivered one of the first all-weather courses built in the region. We capped the entire layout with sand so that water soaks through the cap and drains away from the golf holes.

Though buffeted by coastal breezes, Sun Rise calls for succinct aerial strategies and doesn't offer many opportunities to run the ball up to the small, well-contoured greens. The layout boasts significant elevation changes and quite a bit of cross bunkering. Golfers finishing their rounds here can ascend to the clubhouse for their just rewards. In fact, they may choose to stay overnight in one of 83 deluxe suites inside, so as to be close to Sun Rise for another round tomorrow.
