Located on the island of Barbados, encompassing a former rock quarry and luxuriating across a field where green sugar cane once bent in the trade winds, Royal Westmoreland’s Robert Trent Jones II (golf course architect) golf course replaced the old staple with a sweet new crop of golf holes.

Natural Design Philosophy

Describing our philosophy of natural design as applied to this site, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. says, “When a natural element of the land affords the opportunity for drama-like the quarry here at Royal Westmoreland don't need to trick it up.”

Champion’s Perspective

Masters Champion Ian Woosnam, who owns a home nearby, claims that Royal Westmoreland offers some of the best par threes he's ever played. The par fives are plenty good too, and are mostly reachable for golfers willing to take a chance.

Quarry Nine

Westmoreland's Quarry nine is as smooth and powerful as a rum punch-the island specialty. The first few holes unwind over rolling terrain with ocean views. Number three presents a traditional Redan hole with an island flair-monkeys chattering from nearby coral rock. Following two parallel, opposing long holes that play to a combined par of nine (the wind truly determines which is a par four and which a par five), golfers confront the Hermit Hole, so named because construction crews discovered an old man living in an abandoned cement mixer along the fairway. The hole requires a tee shot over a ravine and an approach hit into a narrow chute between high walls of coral. Carom shots may produce unpredictable results. Behind the green a grass waterfall plunges between a gap in the rock. This is one of five holes that include parts of the old quarry in their design-an element of the unique vision displayed in the creative architecture of the course.

Ridge Nine

The Ridge nine is even more dramatic, playing along steep edges fronting jungle-filled ravines. Bunkers present themselves as friends rather than foes by preventing some shots from disappearing into the shrubbery. The 600-yard thirteenth hole is actually reachable with two well-struck shots thanks to the help of the Trade Winds, an invisible hazard that figured prominently in our design solutions for the site.
