Ta Shee Golf & Country Club

Approximately one hour from Taipei, Ta Shee Golf and Country Club represents a rare Robert Trent Jones II re-design. Our client hired us to completely reinvigorate the entire 27 hole championship golf course in advance of its hosting the prestigious Johnnie Walker Classic. Based on the success of that event, Ta Shee has since drawn the BMW Asian Open and can claim hosting duties on the European, Asian, and Australian pro circuits.

Golf Course Design Challenges

Several major challenges presented themselves at Ta Shee. For starters, our redesign was constrained by the existing routing of the golf holes, which we had to work within. Our charge was to lend an exciting, upbeat character to a formerly flat site beset with irrigation and drainage problems and landscaping issues.

Strategic Course Enhancements

RTJ II met these challenges by reworking lakes and hazards to enhance strategic elements of play, adding new bunkers and removing some that were pre-existing, and reinventing the green complexes. To address maintenance issues we laid down 40,000 linear meters of drain tile throughout the golf course, covered the playing surfaces in 8-10 inches of sand veneer to aid drainage, and regrassed with Tifway 419 Bermuda grass.

Picturesque Shot Maker’s Course

The result is a flowing and picturesque shot maker’s course where golfers must hit well-executed (and well-conceived) shots to set up the best approaches. Five thousand camphor trees and large ficuses line the fairways, and plantings of colorful flowers lend the layout a more open, airier, lighter feel than it previously possessed.
