Bro Hof Slott Golf Club (Stadium Course)
SE-197 91 Bro
Stockholm
Sweden

Location
Twenty miles northwest of Stockholm, Bro Hof Slott Golf Club unfurls along a huge fjord (Lake Mälaren) that provides pure drinking water for the entire city. Featuring 18 beautiful holes, this Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed course provides one of the finest golf facilities in Sweden. Golfers can reach the equally pristine golf course via boat, train, or motorway-options that reflect that the golf holes themselves can also be approached in several ways.
Design Challenge
Bro Hof Slott provided us with the unique challenge of designing a course that would maximize view corridors to Lake Mälaren and that could host large tournaments with lots of spectators. We created landforms on the site to enhance viewing opportunities. In several locations, spectators can stay in one place and watch the action on two different greens and two sets of tees.
Layout Features
Lakes are the defining element of the stadium-style layout; we actually enhanced the visual planes of the site by adding additional lakes for drainage. The gentle terrain is studded by rock outcroppings associated with copses of trees. To compliment the graceful, open terrain we created very American-style bunkers with sweeping bays and broad movements. The bunkering is both strategic and eye catching.
Course Details
At nearly 8,000 yards, Bro Hof Slott is the longest course we've ever designed. The owner requested huge flexibility in being able to set up the course for tournaments and everyday play. Average players will do well to avoid hazards by aiming for the color green and staying way from the color blue. Risk/reward options abound on holes such as number fifteen, a dogleg left around a lake that might allow gamblers to reach the peninsula green in two shots. Number eighteen, which-along with seventeen-will hold up to 70,000 spectators, can be set up as a driveable par four or a longer test.
Future Plans
Bro Hof Slott’s Tournament Course is the first of two layouts RTJ II will design on the site. The Castle Course, built around an old castle that serves as the clubhouse, will follow the original course by about two years. Starting in 2010, Bro Hof Slott will be the home course for the Scandinavian Masters on the European PGA Tour.
