Located along Pinney’s Beach in Nevis’s colonial capital of Charlestown, award-winning golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones II’s Four Seasons Resort Nevis golf course is an oasis within an oasis. This luxury resort championship golf course is widely considered among the best courses in the Caribbean, this rolling layout offers views of Mount Nevis, the posh resort, neighboring island St. Kitts, and the blue splash of the sea.

Caribbean Golf Course Design: Elevation Challenges

Tropical golf course design presents unique challenges through dramatic elevation changes. Dramatic elevation changes provide strategic challenges to players, much as they challenged us in designing the golf course. RTJ II’s architects gently placed the golf holes on a topographically difficult site. The first eight holes stair-step slowly upward amidst well-spaced palms. At the ninth hole the course narrows as it begins climbing more precipitously, with thick jungle to the left and right of many fairways. After ascending for several more holes, players enjoy a brief respite across a flattish ridge before the course heads back down toward the clubhouse and the ocean beyond. Although RTJ II absorbed much of the elevation gain and loss in transitions between holes, the plunge from numbers fourteen through eighteen provides an exhilarating ride.

Strategic Golf Course Architecture

The golf course design firm’s approach to strategic design challenges is evident throughout. Other challenges at the 6,682-yard, par-70 championship course include deep ravines that must be crossed or paralleled on a number of shots. Due to the difficulty posed by the terrain we kept the bunkering simple, setting splashes of three or four small bunkers in some fairways and around greens, which are themselves subtle and receptive. The ruins of an old sugar mill provide historic backdrop to one tee box, and galleries of monkeys may applaud good shots throughout the round. Get there early and utilize the driving range for the full experience.
