Robert Trent Jones II’s impressive qualifications and expertise in golf course architecture come to life at Long Island National Golf Club. Situated on the picturesque North Fork of Long Island, this course, nestled near iconic neighbors like Shinnecock Hills and The National Golf Links, is a testament to his skill. With its bentgrass fairways, natural elevation changes, and challenging bunkers, this course beautifully marries tradition and innovation, offering golfers a unique and rewarding experience on this magnificent terrain.
Picturesque Location
Located on the North Fork of Long Island close enough to Long Island Sound to taste the salt breeze, Long Island National Golf Club offers an inland course with a links style feel. The course also lies close to the famously stylish beach retreat of the Hamptons, and to farms and vineyards. It is approximately 90 miles from Manhattan.
Beautifully Rolling Terrain at Long Island National Golf Club
Laid out in what was once the Gatz family's potato fields, the golf course unfurls across 152 acres of beautifully rolling terrain. Long Island National Golf Club combines scenic interest, variety, playability and fairness in a par-71 6,838-yard course with bentgrass fairways framed by fescue rough. Trees, elevation changes, and 55 bunkers add to this links style golf course. Challenges are provided by heather, gorse and wind. Awkward lies on hilly landing areas, and small, heavily undulating greens further make this a shot-maker's course.
Challenges and Affirmation
Robert Trent Jones II faced two particular challenges in designing this fine public venue reposing near such revered courses as Shinnecock Hills and The National Golf Links. First, we sought to create beautiful and challenging golfing terrain on a formerly flat site. Secondly, we wanted to design a course that would be worthy of its neighbors. Long Island National Golf Club accomplishes both these goals.
Describing his own vision for Long Island National Golf Club, managing partner Bill Gatz says, “I wanted to build something the town could be proud of. To my mind [Robert Trent Jones, Jr.] is a genius. He was able to put his finger right on what we wanted. It’s more golf course than I imagined.” Jones himself felt such an affinity for the finished course that he celebrated his 60th birthday here.
Private Course with Excellent Facilities
