Historical Site Transformation
Built on the former site of the Hong Fatt Tin Mine-the largest open cast tin mine in the world-The Mines Golf Course is the centerpiece of a resort complex stretching across 1,000 acres and encompassing five million square feet of interior space.
Owner's Vision
Owner Tan Sri Lee has said of the project, “I knew it would be a big task. After 100 years of dredging, the environment was spoilt. The idea was to repair the environment and put back vegetation, so why not a golf course? When you build a golf course you rehabilitate the damaged environment and also create a sports facility.”
Environmental Remediation
Lee turned to Robert Trent Jones II to help, at least in part because of our reputation as stewards of the environment. “We wanted the best,”" he said. “Robert Trent Jones, Jr. knew it would be a very big challenge, but he was willing to take it on. The condition of the land was so bad that many thought that it could not be developed. We needed to do a lot of reengineering to repair the soil and stabilize the land.”
RTJ II’s ideas for achieving environmental remediation included lining the fairways with a foot of sand to serve as a buffer against polluted soil and also to provide great drainage. Monsoons during the grassing period presented an additional challenge, but our design team solved the problem of managing Kuala Lumpur’s heavy seasonal rain.
Championship Golf Experience
The Mines Golf Club plays 7,280 yards from the championship tees but is nonetheless a golfer-friendly layout. The course requires accurate approach shots to well-contoured greens, but the fairways are wide and accommodating off the tees. Grassy roll-offs, hollows, and tight chipping areas encourage short game artistry. The Mines Golf Club is a masterpiece of environmental restoration.
