Living up to the owner’s environmental statement, which calls for a minimum risk of harm to the natural world, Australia’s The National Golf Club presents a classic expression of an environmentally responsible Robert Trent Jones II golf course. Our company was chosen for the job based largely on our well-respected work at Joondalup, in Western Australia.
A Unique Piece of Land
Robert Trent Jones, Jr. has said of The National, “Any golf course architect would kill for a piece of land like this. It is one of the most unique areas of links country left anywhere in the world.”
Meeting Challenges and Design
Challenges in building The National (which is the largest private club in Australia) included demolishing an existing course on the site and introducing a residential estate to the property. We met those challenges through careful routing and design plans that also followed the natural movement of the terrain.
Hillside Oasis with Ocean Views
The course plays across a hillside 80 meters above the sea, amid rugged coastal land vegetated by tea trees and offering ocean views from sixteen holes. Sharp bunkers, tiered landings, thick scrub, and extreme greens characterized by ridges, tiers, and frightening speed lend this course its bite. On writer has said, “Before you putt from the roof of a Volkswagen and try to stop the ball on its bonnet you should practice on the greens at the National.” The course was designed to play like a lion in the wind and like a lamb on a clear, sunny day.
Redefining Golf Course Excellence
Robert Trent Jones, Jr. adds, “The National will make me famous-either as the designer who has created one of the world's great golf courses or as a designer who stuffed up some of the best golf course real estate imaginable.” The National surely attests to the former.
